“I was heavy since I was about six or seven. I didn't really notice until eighth grade. I went to a party and I have a buddy, Joe, he's in a good shape. And I heard someone called me Joe's fat friend and I realized, I might be fat. You grow up your whole life knowing you're a bit big, but then to realize that people actually think you're fat ….
I tried a couple of different diets. I did Atkins and I did no sugar whatsoever, and they worked. I'd lose like 10 or 20 pounds pretty quick, and it was cool. And then, all of a sudden, I was like, ‘Wow, I lost the weight, so I can go back to eating whatever I want.’ And you do that and you gain that weight plus 10 pounds more, so you're even fatter than you started out.
My mom started doing the program first and then, I mean, I just kind of jumped on the bandwagon and then got just as into it as she is. She started going to the gym and eating healthy and when there's only healthy food in your house, you start eating that. Once you get into it or you realize that it is helping you, it becomes easy. It's not a hard thing to do. It just becomes a part of your life.
My eating did change, but I've cut out none of my favorite foods. All my favorite foods stayed. I just changed how I would cook them, like instead of using the white pasta, I use brown pasta, and it tastes the exact same. I still eat steak for dinner. Everyone thinks you can’t have red meat. There's nothing I cut out. I don’t deprive myself in any way. You can really eat your favorite foods and lose weight.
I lost 100 pounds within eight or nine months, and I've kept it off for almost a year. Now that I've lost the weight, life is completely different. It's enjoyable. Walking up the stairs in my house before I lost weight, I would get tired, and that's bad. Now, I can run up in our stairs over and over and over again not get tired. And after you lose weight, you don’t have to worry about being the fat friend. You can be just, you know, another guy.
It's really important that everyone knows it's not a diet either. It is a lifestyle. A diet is something you do for a couple of weeks to lose weight, to look good in your bathing suit. A lifestyle is something you do and you look good for the rest of your life.”
